Walmart cards occupy an unusual middle ground. Because Walmart sells groceries, petrol, pharmacy items, tyres and televisions, a Walmart card is closer to general-purpose money than almost any other store credit. Walmart cards do not expire and carry no service fees, which is why so many of them survive years in a drawer at full value. They can be used in store, on walmart.com, and at Walmart-operated fuel stations, and the balance carries across those without needing to be split. What they cannot do is convert to cash at the register — that is the wall people hit when they try to solve the problem themselves.

If you shop at Walmart even occasionally, the sensible move is to use the card on a normal grocery run and keep your own money instead. One practical note: Walmart cards and Walmart MoneyCards are different products. The gift card is closed-loop store credit, which is what we buy.
