The thing most people do not realise about a Kroger card is how far it travels. Kroger operates under a long list of banner names — Ralphs, Fry's, King Soopers, Smith's, Harris Teeter, Dillons, QFC and others — and gift cards are honoured across the family. A card that looks stranded because there is no store called Kroger near you may well work at the supermarket you already shop at under a different name.

People write off Kroger cards all the time without realising the supermarket they already use every week is part of the same group. If none of the banners is near you — which is true across large parts of the Northeast and Southwest — then the card has no natural home and converting it is the sensible move.
